When Gregg Lemkau left Goldman Sachs in late 2020 to run Michael Dell's investment firm, many within and outside the bank were surprised.

The co-head of investment banking with a 28-year tenure at the firm was widely seen as a potential successor to CEO David Solomon.

Gerry Cardinale, a Goldman veteran who came up with Lemkau as associates, wasn't expecting his departure to MSD Partners either.

Cardinale, who had left Goldman a decade ago to start his own investment firm, knew it had to be a massive opportunity to pull away Lemkau.
