Recorded with guests including pianist Zoe Rahman, a piece Turkish ensemble and a chamber orchestra integrating western and Arabic styles, Mounqaliba – ‘being in a state of reversal’ in classical Arabic builds on the acoustic, orchestral sound of the acclaimed Ana Hina of with a set of original new songs, evocative interludes, and a limpid, lucid reading of Nick Drake’s The Riverman.
Natacha Atlas was born in Brussels of Anglo-Middle Eastern parentage, and lived there until the age of eight before moving to the UK. At the age of 18, after travelling for extended periods through Turkey, Greece and the Middle East, she found herself back in Brussels, making her first forays as a professional performer by guesting with a Salsa band made up of Chilean and Cuban émigrés, and also bellydancing in a succession of Turkish and Arabic nightclubs.
